It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Santa arriving in a helicopter?!

Behold, one of Bend’s most beloved traditions returns the day after Thanksgiving! Each year, Santa gives his reindeer a well-deserved day off to rest up for Christmas Eve. Instead, with a little help from his friends at AirLink Critical Care Transport and the Deschutes County Search and Rescue Team, he trades the sleigh for a helicopter ride to meet eager families and friends gathered on the west event lawn of the Old Mill District on Friday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m.

From the moment you arrive, the Old Mill District comes alive with festive energy. The air feels brighter, the river sparkles a little more, and you can almost sense that holiday magic in motion. Grab a cozy latte or hot chocolate from Sisters Coffee Co. or pick up a fresh pastry from M’s Bakery before heading across the flag bridge to find your perfect viewing spot. As the helicopter begins to appear in the distance, the crowd’s excitement builds. Kids wave, parents smile, and for a moment, everyone is caught up in the wonder.

When Santa arrives, the magic truly begins. He’s greeted by his cheerful elves and North Pole helpers before making his way over to SantaLand directly above LUSH, kicking off four festive weekends leading up to Christmas Day. Here you can meet Santa, snap a keepsake photo, and drop off letters to the North Pole at the special Express Mailbox. (No stamp required, just don’t forget a return address if your little one wants a reply from Santa himself!) And while you’re there, take a moment to visit the Tree of Joy, a beautiful Rotary Club of Greater Bend project that helps bring holiday gifts and meals to children and families in need.

Come for Santa, but stay for the shops as it is Black Friday, after all! The Old Mill District shops will have fun deals and in-store treats you won’t want to miss. Stroll with your loved ones, sip something warm, and take in the sights and sounds of the season. No matter your age, this magical day will remind you what the holidays are all about – community, joy, and that unmistakable spark of holiday wonder that makes us all feel like kids again.
