Goats Are Restoring the River’s Edge
If you’ve floated past the marshy stretch of the Deschutes near the Old Mill District and heard a mysterious “baa” echoing through the marsh, you’re not imagining things. We’ve got goats.
We’re working with Central Oregon Habitat Solutions to help restore the health of our riparian area along the river. And believe it or not, goats are one of the best tools for the job.
Why Goats?
Historically, this stretch of the Deschutes was managed by native beavers. These hardworking engineers carved out channels through the marsh, creating a network of wetlands that supported native plants like willows, alders, sedges and rushes. The result was a thriving riparian zone, a transition space between land and water that helps regulate flooding, improve water quality and support wildlife.
Over time, with fewer beavers on the landscape and increased human activity, that natural system began to fade. The marsh dried out. Invasive plants like cattails and brambles took over, crowding out native species and pushing beavers even farther away.
Enter the goats.
Our Three Little Helpers
This summer we’ve brought in three goats to help control invasive plant growth in a sustainable and low-impact way. Unlike machinery or chemicals, goats are quiet, efficient and natural. They graze on overgrown vegetation, fertilize as they go and leave space for native plants to return.
Their work is an important first step toward making this area more hospitable to beavers once again. The long-term goal is to replant native species, especially those that beavers prefer, and encourage them to return and resume their role as nature’s land managers.

What’s Next
Restoring riparian habitat is no small task, but we’re proud to be taking this step toward a healthier Deschutes River. With guidance from Central Oregon Habitat Solutions, we’re focused on bringing balance back to the marsh and giving native plants and animals the chance to thrive once more.
So the next time you’re floating the river or walking along the trails, keep an ear out. You might not spot them, but you just might hear the sound of three very busy goats doing their part for the ecosystem.
